Asylum
ASYLUM
A dark and challenging text-based adventure. Explore, hide, and fight your way to freedom during a horrific night in the Asylum.
Created for SCREAM JAM 2024
If you see potential in this project, let me know so I can add more content. My next focus would be adding new floors, weapons, and spells.
Gameplay
This game is a bit of a mix between text-based RPGs and point-and-click adventure games. Combat is often the wrong option, so be smart about sneaking your way through encounters until you're prepared.
The main mechanic is skill checks. When you make an action you roll a die and add it to your relevant stat, and the enemy does the same. If you roll below the enemy, you fail the action and usually incur a penalty. If you tie or beat the enemy by 1-2 points you still incur the penalty but succeed in your action. On a 3+ you take no penalty.
You don't see the enemy stats so judge them based on the flavor text and appearance. As a general rule, most enemies have better Might than they do Agility.
Actions:
- Search: Examines the current room for any items, notes, or interactables
- Attack: If you have a melee weapon equipped, make a Might check against the enemy. You deal damage on a success and receive damage unless you win win by 3+. If you have a ranged weapon you can deal damage without needing to roll or risking damage.
- Evade: Make an Agility check against the enemy. On a success you are able to move through the enemy into another square, although you take damage unless you win by 3+.
- Retreat: Automatically return to your previous room. Does not require a roll and you do not take any damage.
- Cast Spell: An action you cannot take until you learn a spell to use it with. Roll an Arcana check, on a success you deal massive damage, but you receive corruption unless you win by 3+.

I really enjoyed the game, especially the cool monster designs with that wobbly effect. But i think I might have encountered a bug, I don't get any sound while trying to play it in the browser.
